林语堂，1895年10月10日生于福建漳州，乳名和乐，名玉堂，后改语堂。22岁获上海圣约翰大学学士学位，27岁获美国哈佛大学比较文学硕士学位，29岁获德国莱比锡大学语言学博士学位，同年回国，先后执教于北京大学、北京师范大学、厦门大学和上海东吴大学。1936年后居住美国，此后主要用英文写作。1966年回国，定居台湾。1967年受聘为香港中文大学研究教授。1975年荣任国际笔会副会长。1976年3月26日病逝于香港，葬于台北阳明山故居。林语堂用英文创作和翻译的一系列经典作品影响深远，奠定了他在国际文坛上的重要地位。

林语堂（1895--1976)，福建龙溪人,现代著名作家。原名和乐，改名玉堂、语堂，笔名毛驴、宰予、岂青等，文学家。福建龙溪人。1912年入上海圣约翰大学。1919年后留学美国、德国。1923年回国，在北京大学、北京女子师范大学任教，支持爱国学生运动。1926年去厦门大学任教，写杂文，并研究语言。1932年后陆续创办《论语》、《人间世》、《宇宙风》，推动小品文的创作，成为论语派主要人物。1936年旅居美国。1947年任联合国教科文组织美术与文学主任。1954年任新加坡南洋大学校长。1966年定居台北。著有《剪拂集》、《开明英文读本》、《开明英文文法》、《大荒集》、《我的话》、《生活的艺术》、《吾国与吾民》、《无所不读》、《京华烟云》、《风声鹤唳》和《语堂文存》等。
